Follow the steps below to reinstall an optical drive:
-Click on Start and then Control Panel.
-Click on the button in the upper left hand corner labeled “Switch to Classic View”
-Double Click on System
-In System, click on the Hardware Tab.
-In the Hardware Tab, click on Device Manager.
-In the Device Manager, double click on “DVD/CD-ROM Drives”
-Double click on [...]

This is a limitation of the 32 bit Vista OS.
If a computer has 4 gigabytes (GB) of random-access memory (RAM) installed, the system memory that is reported in the System Information dialog box in Windows Vista is less than you expect.

The DVD/CD-ROM drives will not read or write either CD or DVD disks (or both) and may not play DVD movies. This can be caused by a dirty or corrupted disk, corrupted or misconfigured drivers in Windows, or one or more of the drive’s read/write lasers going bad.

If the unit will not turn on and has no power:

The “Space” screensaver, installed as part of the Space Theme under Microsoft Windows Media Center Edition, has exhibited some issues on systems equipped with certain nVidia video graphics controllers.
